The Fourth House

The fourth house, mataram, means mother. It is associated with the chest and breast. The fourth house signifies all that nurtures us, including our genetic roots, and happiness of the home. It relates to land, property, furniture and vehicles of transportation. The fourth house is the deepest personal house in the chart. It signifies the absence of the Sun at midnight when the Moon (the reflected light of the Sun) in all its phases becomes apparent in the night sky. The phases of the Moon that relate to our emotional life signify our emotional well-being. Our home represents our retreat from the world, the place that, like a mother, comforts us, sustains us, and renews us. It is here that we are our most intimate selves, and can express our emotions most freely.
