Mercury (Budha)

Mercury indicates the mind and the intellect. It shows how we think. It is the “lens” through which our Sun energy tends to be directed, showing how we want to communicate that Sun. It shows how we want to communicate our energy and our ideas.

The placement of Mercury in your chart will indicate how you think. Do you think like a Taurus? Do you think like a Scorpio?

Mercury is the first of the two inner, personal planets, which lie between us and the Sun (the other being Venus). It can be either in the same sign as the Sun or one sign either before or after it (to a maximum of 45 degrees). It never goes further than that. Venus also remains close to the Sun, but it can go as far as 60 degrees (two signs) away from it. Both these inner planets will always be very close to the Sun. So if you have your Sun in Virgo, you can have Mercury in Libra or in Virgo or in Leo, but you can’t have Mercury, for example, in Taurus.

When you think of Mercury, think of the mind, and how it expresses ideas. Exactly how it communicates will depend on the nature of its sign, as we’ll come to appreciate when we look at the signs themselves.
