Neptune

Neptune is referred to as the planet of spiritual understanding.  Certainly it can bring this spiritual understanding, but in an indirect way. It is another of the outer planets, which brings in long-overdue awareness. And it can raise us to great heights of spiritual awareness, or cause us to drown in a sea of confusion and delusion, depending how we use its energies. Neptune brings an element of confusion and vagueness to whatever house it is placed in, and it affects different parts of our chart as it transits through the sky during our lifetime. The confusion it brings means we have to make a choice—we can either become resentful, depressed and unbalanced because of this element of confusion, or we can use this challenge to develop deeper understanding. Its very fogginess can prompt us to make a move towards the spiritual light, the same way a sailor appreciates the lighthouse beacon more on a misty day than on a clear one.

When Neptune casts a strong influence over the chart, it reflects in sensitivity, secretiveness and dreaminess. Neptune has a misty, ethereal quality to it, ill suited at times to the harsh realities of the mundane world.

When expressed in a healthy, positive fashion, it translates as intuitive understanding, wisdom, creative ability, idealism, clairvoyance and evolved spirituality.

When severely afflicted in the chart, this picture is turned inside out. What was meant to be ethereal sensitivity now becomes vagueness, indecision and escapism. Guilt, depression and confusion cloud our horizon. There may well be an undercurrent of intrigue and deceit. Excessive fearfulness and obsessions of all kinds may take form out of the mist. There may be a tendency towards addiction, morbidity, introversion, warped sensuality and self-indulgence. Energies may be carelessly diffused, as the person drifts through life in a self-created fog.
