Have You Seen the Best of You?
The features of the hand reflect the process of our karmic evolution. The mounts, pads of flesh upon which the lines travel, represent our soul or superconscious nature. In Vedic palmistry, the lines are classified as major and minor. The major lines—the heart line, the head line and the life line—reflect the subconscious. The conscious mind, represented by the minor lines, reflects awareness of our inner talents. The minor lines reflect how in touch we are with our subconscious and superconscious.
Since our external environment is constantly changing, the minor lines are often seen in flux. When we are preoccupied by the circumstances and events around us, we may lose contact with our inner self. Our preoccupation will be reflected by a busy network of minor lines obscuring the major lines and the mounts beneath them. Remaining peaceful in the midst of change is reflected in the minor lines being equal in strength to the major line, allowing the energy of the mounts to be expressed through them. The minor lines act as a barometer to show how connected we are with our deeper self while facing everyday challenges.
Deeply rooted convictions are not easy to modify. Thus change in the major lines takes a great deal of time and effort. Changes in the formation of the mounts are even more challenging, as they reflect our superconscious nature.
Major Lines Alone
When only major lines are present in our hands, it indicates that our life unfolds as a series of events that simply happen to us. We enjoy the positive ones and endure those that are difficult. We can lead a mechanical life unaware of our potential to express depth of feelings and intentions. We may have the feeling that, although we have rich resources and capabilities, we have no outlet for expression. Naturally we will feel frustrated or disconnected from our inner capabilities, as if we were sleepwalking through life.
As the conscious mind is more subject to the influence of everyday environment, it is naturally more fluid and changeable. Therefore, the minor lines are more easily altered than major lines. Changes in these lines are often visible in as little as three months.
Too Many Minor Lines
Too many minor lines are like weeds in a garden, distorting our expression. We are overwhelmed by the present situation and can be distracted by circumstances, runaway thoughts, whims and ideas. A preoccupation with the details of day-to-day living may make it impossible for us to tap into our inner resources.
We can learn to balance our major and minor lines. Concentration is the key. We need to be in the moment and conscious of our thoughts. By repeated efforts and a spiritual discipline including introspection, deep breathing techniques and meditation, we can bring harmony between the major and minor lines.

Are You Compatible? The Major Lines: The Importance of Checking Both Hands
Last month, in our series Are You Compatible, we examined the life line and its importance in developing successful relationships. This month, we will look at the importance of checking both hands.
“Which hand do you look at?” is one of the most frequently asked questions when it comes to palmistry. Essentially, both hands need to be studied to understand more about our thoughts and habits stored in our subconscious, and how they influence our will to grow and evolve in the present.
The hand we use to write is the dominant hand. This hand — whether right or left — will show most of the time a more progressive pattern of lines and signs than those in the less dominant hand. This reflects an evolution of consciousness taking place from past, deep-seated, subconscious patterns of thought and behavior toward making more conscious, positive change in the present. The non-dominant hand indicates our ingrained habits stored in the subconscious. How these habits influence the present and future is seen by weighing the strength of our subconscious traits in this hand, together with the progressive influences seen in the conscious, dominant one.
We often call our partner our better half; yet in reality, we are simply looking at the reflection of our own subconscious in the other person. When we attract someone into our life, we are asking to be shown this hidden side that, perhaps on a conscious level, we would have difficulty seeing. Often a marriage or other close relationship begins to deteriorate as we avoid looking at this reflection. It may be too difficult to face our imperfections and make the necessary changes to improve. We might put the blame on our partner, our mirror. We may even move on to someone else only to discover another reflection of ourselves. By recognizing our limitations, as well as our strengths, we can help ourselves and our partner to grow.
With this understanding of the importance of checking both hands to see our evolutionary progress — especially in regards to the quality of our relationships — a look at the quadrangle, made up of the lines of heart and head, is especially important, as it denotes the balance between our thinking and feeling. A comparative analysis of the quadrangle in both hands reveals the evolutionary process unfolding in our emotional makeup. Ideally, the formation of the quadrangle should be improving from the non-dominant to the dominant hand.
Ernst and Nina - Our Partner as our Mirror
Ernst has a thriving practice in alternative healing. He has a healing stigmata, denoting his talent as a healer, a destiny line originating on the mount of Moon, denoting his desire to help and nurture people, and a well-formed quadrangle, reflecting his emotional balance. In her dominant hand, Nina, his wife, has an imbalanced quadrangle, as seen by the short head line, indicating insecurity over the future, including being able to meet their monthly expenses. However, in her non-dominant left hand, Nina has a better-balanced quadrangle, as seen by the longer head line. Although consciously she is insecure, on a deeper subconscious level, she is more confident with her husband’s dedication to his vocation and ability to pay the bills. The short head line in Ernst’s non-dominant hand shows that, at times, he will question his own ability to meet his commitments.
Nature has brought them together to test their ability to evolve and grow. Whose dominant hand will bring out the negative or positive tendencies carried over from the other’s past life? Nina will test his confidence; Ernst will challenge her willingness to let go her insecurities and trust him.

Are You Compatible? The Major Lines: Indications of Compatibility — The Life Line
Last month, in our series Are You Compatible, we examined the profound impact the formation of the head line can have on our relationships. This month, we will look at the life line and its importance in developing successful relationships.
Life Line
The life line yields valuable information about our physical well-being. It indicates the state of health, the degree of stamina, and the condition of the nervous system. It also reveals the extent of our enthusiasm for life, and our willingness to undertake challenges.
From a spiritual viewpoint, the life line indicates our degree of self-control and ability to concentrate and focus. It can also be studied for clues to life events that chronicle the major influences affecting our lifestyle, such as family influences, health obstacles and interpersonal conflicts.
The formation of the life line shows to what extent we are motivated to live a harmonious existence. People often associate this line with how long they are going to live; however, it has more to do with the quality of our life. Like everything in the hand, the life line can change. Working with a palmist can help discover what corrective measures can help stimulate the desire to live a long life. If we recognize that we are able to subtly program our enthusiasm for living and we are willing to change our attitude, we can grow a longer life line.
Marcia - Building a New Life
In her before prints, Marcia has a short and fragile life line. She was extremely sensitive as seen by the joined head and life lines. When the first print was taken, Marcia was feeling emotionally distraught due to the recent breakup of her marriage. She had lost her sense of direction. Fortunately, the presence of a Mercury line gave her the ability to realize she was meant to find a positive outlet for her self-expression and reaching out for help, she prayed intensely. With the help of an old friend and her work with a palmist, she found the motivation to want to live a long and healthy life. The second handprint taken two years later reveals her renewed inspiration for living. She found a satisfying and challenging new career in teaching. With her more stable lifestyle, Marcia became more self-reliant, and less emotionally fragile.

Are You Compatible? The Major Lines: Indications of Compatibility — The Shape of the Head Line
Last month, in our series Are You Compatible, we examined how the head line termination can affect our relationships. This month, we will focus on the profound impact the formation of the head line can have in our inter-relationships.
As we saw last month, the head line is located in the center of the palm and shows how we think. Ideally, it indicates our ability to make decisions based on reason and the potential to be objective. As such, we can weigh the facts in a situation and make objective decisions. We understand the consequences of our actions. We are intelligent, visionary and can have long-range goals and ambitions. As the head line relates to our ability to perceive clearly, its formation shows whether our mind is acting as our best friend or worst enemy, creating harmony or turbulence in our relationships.
The shape of the head line reflects our mental attitude. Rounded lines show flexibility in our attitude, as well as a give-and-take approach towards relationships. A round or curved line shows many lifetimes of experience where we have learned to roll with the punches and, in the process, have gained a lot of empathy, understanding and toleration for others’ ideas and ways of doing things. Even if we don’t always agree, we value the importance of freedom of choice. We believe in equal opportunity and express in our behavior the Indian greeting of namaste, my soul bows to yours. It is important however that the line does not curve so deeply into the Moon, so that our sensitive nature causes us to become hurt from what we perceive as an unfeeling world.
When the line is straight, we are determined to hold on to our own point of view. Consequently, it is harder for us to go along with others’ ways of looking at things. When the head line is long and straight, terminating on Mars positive, we are passionate and intense in our approach towards life. We often seek a cause or purpose that we can believe in. However as the nature of the line is straight and not curving, we can be headstrong and unyielding. Consequently our single-mindedness can be detrimental to our relationships. We should make a conscious effort to be more open to the ideas and opinions of others. In this way we will develop a great sense of camaraderie to achieve our goals in an inspirational way. Also by developing greater empathy our partner will feel more motivated to open up and share their feelings with us.
It is always important to remember that just as we continue to change and evolve, so do the lines on our hands. As our personality matures, our attitudes, priorities, and activities may also change. We may find ourself growing more understanding and empathetic in all of our relationships. These important changes are all reflected in our hands.
Sarah - Change by Wisdom or Experience
Jerry’s wife had been in a coma for many years when Sarah fell in love with him. Although she wanted them to live together, Jerry asked her to be understanding and supportive of his decision to remain fully committed to the care of his wife. However, Sarah was unable to realize that Jerry’s loyalty to his wife was an indication of his profound spirit. Jerry also loved Sarah deeply, but she resented his unwillingness to live with her and nagged him constantly. Sarah’s straight head line indicates her unyielding temperament at that time.
It was only when he died shortly after his wife that Sarah came to understand the depth of Jerry’s friendship and love for her. She was so moved by this realization that her heart melted. She became more loving and gentle and her head line began to curve.

Are You Compatible? The Major Lines: Indications of Compatibility — Part II
Last month, in our series Are You Compatible, we examined the significance of the lines of head and life as indicators of our ability to develop positive relationships. This month, we will focus more specifically on the head line and how its termination can have a profound impact on your relationships.
As we saw last month, the head line is located in the center of the palm and shows how we think. It indicates our ability to apply reason in our everyday life and the degree to which we are able to perceive objectively. Consequently, it shows our potential for such spiritual qualities as concentration, peace and intuition.
The origin of the head line can be understood as the initial concept and motivating force for our thoughts and its termination is the manner in which we manifest our thought patterns. The ideal head line termination is at the border of Mars positive and the Moon. It shows that we combine the energy and passion of Mars positive with the sensitivity and creativity of the Moon. It denotes that we are confident, expressive, understanding, and sincere. We believe miracles can happen.

Head line terminating on Mars Positive
A long head line terminating on Mars positive reveals a passionate and intense approach to life. It reveals a dynamic sense of purpose that proves successful in fighting for what we believe.

Head line terminating on the Moon
A head line diving deep into the zone of the Moon denotes a deeply reflective nature. Depending on the development of our Moon, we may be highly creative or philosophic. However, it is essential in either case to have a strong destiny line, as then we can have an outlet for our heightened sensitivity to make the world a more beautiful place. Otherwise, we can remain aloof due to our sensitive nature constantly experiencing hurt in an unfeeling world.
Relationships present an opportunity for people to learn from each other. Partners can see their relationship as an opportunity to help them grow and develop qualities that otherwise would remain dormant or they can resist changing and maintain their own way of thinking and behaving.
“Derek and Marie” — Shiva and Shakti
Derek’s straight head line terminating on Mars positive indicates his straightforward and productive temperament. Marie’s head line terminating on the Moon reflects her idealistic, sensitive nature. Her aesthetic and artistic temperament complements Derek’s passionate nature. However, at times his direct manner can hurt her feelings, causing tension between them. However, they have been married for a long time, learning throughout the years to accommodate those differences so that today they derive much pleasure being in each others’ company especially in their travels around the world.

Take some time to compare head lines with a friend or anyone in your life to better understand the dynamics taking place between you. Check whether the head lines are originating and terminating in the same area or if the origin and termination are very different as in the case of Derek and Marie. If you are having trouble locating the origins and terminations of your lines, we have a consultation service where you can send your prints through the Internet and I will be happy to get back to you. Are You Compatible? The Major Lines: Indications of Compatibility — Part I
Last month, in our series Are You Compatible, we examined the union line, which reflects our degree of commitment in love. In this article, we will focus on the significance of the lines of head and life as indicators of our ability to develop positive relationships.
The head line is located in the center of the palm and shows how we think. It denotes our ability to apply reason in our everyday life and indicates the degree to which we are able to perceive objectively. The life line is located in the lowermost area of the palm and reflects how we live. It indicates the state of our health, our degree of stamina, and the condition of our nervous system. It shows our approach towards life and reveals the extent of our enthusiasm for life, and our willingness to undertake challenges. Ideally, these lines should originate at a slight distance from each other, indicating an appropriate resonance between thinking and action. We are considerate for others as we are acutely aware of what it feels like when others are insensitive to us.
Head Line Joined to Life Line
When the origins of both our head and life lines are joined, we can feel extremely sensitive to the point of being easily hurt when we feel misunderstood. During the period of our life when the lines are joined, we may feel as if we are “walking on hot coals.” Until we reach the age when the lines separate, we may be in a constant state of introspection and self-questioning. At the same time, we may feel restricted in our self-expression. It can be seen as a blessing in disguise as we become conscious of our relation to our ‘self’ and to ‘others’, and learn to put ourselves in others’ shoes.
At the time when the head and life lines separate from each other, we are able to take a step back and see things from a more objective point of view. We are able to transform our sensitivity into empathy for others. This formation indicates our ability to be successful in the healing professions. In our relationships, our sensitivity can be a great asset in helping us to respond to the needs of others; however, we need to guard against the tendency to be overwhelmed by our emotions.
Head Line Widely Separated from Life Line

The head and life lines widely separated from each other at the point of origin indicate a great sense of freedom to spontaneously think. We are highly charged emotionally due to the proximity of our head line to the heart line. This can cause us to think and behave in a subjective manner. Hardly are we awake in the morning, when we are filled with ideas of things to do and people to see. We may be occupied in some activity and not realize that we have not stopped to take a breath or smell the roses. Without any close affiliation to the life line, denoting body awareness, our minds occupied in thought can be desensitized to what is happening around us. We have to learn to slow down, get in touch with our body, be aware of our breathing, and be sensitive to the opinions and feelings of others.
When our head line origin corresponds to that of our partner’s, we are likely to have a similar approach to life and, consequently, can more easily identify with each other’s point of view. However, this is not always a requirement for a successful relationship. For example, Pam and Carlo have remained friends for over 30 years despite having very different life and head origins: one is joined, the other is separate. This has caused some difficulty in their relationship, as Pam’s impetuous nature is at odds with Carlo’s more cautious temperament. Nevertheless, they have learned to turn their difference into an advantage. The way we handle the friction that opposites tend to create for each other can be an opportunity for growth or cause for disharmony. Carlo centers, calms and helps Pam focus her energies, while she encourages him to try new things. They can rely on the strength of their relationship to bring out the qualities that could allow them to develop a more balanced nature.

The Quadrangle: Landing Strip of the Angels — Part II
We are continuing our discussion on the quadrangle. Sometimes referred to as “the landing strip of the angels,” it is a significant indicator of mental and emotional harmony. It takes effort to develop a balance between these two inseparable aspects of our nature—the heart, indicating our feeling, and the head, our reason. If the head line overpowers the heart line, we may rationalize our feelings. If the heart line overpowers the head line, we may be emotionally biased when we make decisions. However, when we achieve a balance between our reason and feeling, neither one pulls the other out of alignment. In the peace and serenity created through this equilibrium, we become open to receive heavenly blessings and support. This assistance may come from friends and acquaintances or through visionary dreams.
The Importance of the Distance Between the Lines
Whether in nature or spirit, everything in the universe is polarized. From the macro universe, through the solar system, to us as individuals right down to the very smallest sub-atomic particle, all things have the positive and negative energies of a magnet. And, like any magnet, our universe—and everything within it—has a central neutral zone that is neither positive nor negative, but rather, like the original “source point” or center, is magnetic-less. No matter how many times a magnet is split in half, it retains its opposite poles, and also its neutral center.
The same electromagnetic dynamics found throughout the universe are also found in the hands. We are all human magnets. We attract or repel people and circumstances into and out of our lives. In the context of the quadrangle, the heart line is positive (+), the head line is the negative (-) force, and the space between the heart and head lines is considered neutral. As a magnetic field becomes discernible when two magnets are slowly brought together, the strength of the field can be increased or decreased by narrowing or widening the gap between them.
In addition to the length and the strength of the heart and head lines, the distance between them also determines the degree to which the quadrangle is balanced. A certain amount of tension—neither too much nor too little—between the head and heart is necessary to create synergy. The space created between the head and heart lines, wherein neither line pushes or pulls the other out of its natural placement, creates an ideal “landing strip for the angels.”
Lines that are too close together forming a narrow quadrangle indicate that we are unable to make use of our intuition, as we are often tense, worried and high-strung. Meditation and yoga are beneficial as they help us to relax and open up to support.

Too wide a quadrangle indicates that the magnetic effect between the lines is diminished. A wide quadrangle shows that we lack concentration and discernment. We appear lost or out-of-focus. The development of a Saturn line, denoting a focus on our purpose, would help us direct the energy of our overly wide quadrangle. It would indicate that we are able to channel our emotional and intellectual energies more constructively.

The Effects of a Balanced Quadrangle
In Eastern metaphysics, there are two currents called pingla and ida that circulate in our spine: one is hot and the other cold. They are represented by the heart line and the head line respectively. When they come together, a third current in the spine, called the sushumna, is activated. The blending of these warm and cool currents produces a balanced quadrangle. They meet in the sushumna creating a condition that, like Goldilocks’ porridge, is “just right.” On a physical level, this condition is experienced as a healthy body temperature of 37º Celsius, which is felt as neither hot nor cold.
In the quadrangle, this neutral, balanced condition signifies a healthy spiritual state of being. It is shown by free-flowing energy between the heart and head, and emotional and physical ease. We feel free from distracting circumstances and are able to both think objectively and feel lovingly. Furthermore, within this calm interior environment, the ground is prepared for greater wisdom and receptivity.
A balanced quadrangle denotes reliability and maturity. There is a conscious awareness that life has a purpose, and that we have something useful to contribute to humanity. When passions overrule reason or logic subdues emotions, satisfying relationships are unlikely to flourish. Balance in the quadrangle indicates that we are ready for unconditional love: we are open to receiving love but do not demand it. When the mind is quiet and the heart is still, we can enter into that sushumna state of inner peace. It is a state of loving — with ourselves, with friends, with lovers and with God.
