Abhyanga Massage

Abhyanga (60 - 180 minutes)

AbhyangaAbhyanga is a full-body massage which involves liberally covering the client in warm oil. Smooth yet firm movements knead the therapeutic oil deeply into the tissue of the body. As a result toxins are eliminated from the body via the intestinal tract. Ayurvedic practitioners recommend abhyanga massage daily to maintain one’s overall health and wellbeing.

Regular abhyanga massage promotes longevity, greater resistance to stress, deeper sleep, increased energy, as well as joint and muscle flexibility. Abhyanga massage results in an overall improvement in health, that keeps us youthful with soft, glowing skin. Moreover, it helps prevent the accumulation of physical and emotional blockages.

The sanskrit word sneha can be translated as both "oil" and "love". The liberal application of oil during this treatment, therefore, can be seen as eliciting deep feelings of stability, warmth, and serenity. One rationale for this effect is that the therapeutic oil penetrates the seven dhatus, or layers of tissues, in effect reconnecting us with our “deeper” selves. It is here - removed from the desensitizing “noise” of daily life - that we can experience, for a time, a more forgiving and life-affirming ambience.

The massage finishes with a cozy warm blanket and a soothing hot water bottle to prolong the therapeutic effects of the abhyanga treatment. After the therapist leaves, it is suggested that you rest quietly for approximately 15 minutes before showering.
