Effects of the 28-day Cycle of the Moon on the Houses in our Chart

By Ghanshyam Singh Birla, Founder of the Birla Center

Because we are born on Earth, astrologically speaking we view how each of the planets affects us on Earth and see the Earth as the center of the solar system. This is referred to as geocentric. In astronomical reality, the Sun is the center of our solar system. This is referred to as a heliocentric system where the Sun is at the center around which the planets Mercury, Venus, the Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto all revolve. The Moon is the only celestial body in this system that revolves around the Earth, and, together with it, around the Sun.

Each of the planets has its own elliptic path, each taking varying amounts of time to orbit the Sun. These times range from Mercury (closest to the Sun), which takes approximately 88 days to orbit the Sun, to Pluto (furthest from the Sun), which completes its orbit approximately every 249 years.

Jyotish emphasizes the importance of the planets that are closest in proximity to the Sun, those that have a smaller elliptic path around it, thus taking less time to complete their orbit. Consequently, we are more sensitive to their changing effects. They are referred to as the personal planets. In order of their closeness to the Sun, they are Mercury, Venus, the Earth, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn.

house_moon_blogOf all the celestial bodies, Jyotish places emphasis on the Moon, which takes only 28 days (more precisely 27 days, 7 hours 43 minutes) to revolve around the Earth, consequently making us most susceptible to its influence. The Moon, in its orbit around the Earth, passes through all 12 signs of the zodiac and their related houses, which signify key aspects of our life, as indicated by the chart. Each sign comprises 30°. The Moon travels 13° 58’ per day and, therefore, stays in one sign a bit more than two days.
The characteristics of some houses motivate us to be more outgoing while others necessitate us to be more reflective. Therefore, depending on your ascendant, which determines your first house, in one month you will experience all the effects of the Moon transiting through your twelve houses, thus highlighting the affairs related to each house.

However, as Shakespeare observed, we are masters of our own fate, that “the fault... is not in our stars, but in ourselves.” Knowledge is power and understanding what areas of the chart are highlighted will allow you to control your reactions to those daily influences.

In order for you to learn about the effects of the Moon on your houses, we will present each month a chart, showing the position of the Moon in each sign throughout the month. By being aware of the Moon position, you can familiarize yourself with your innermost feelings and responses.

If you do not know your ascendant, we have included a tool in our site enabling you to calculate your ascendant — your first house. If you are unable to calculate your ascendant, contact us and we will be happy to help you. Then, from the Moon chart, you will be able to know which house the Moon is transiting. For example, if you are an Aries ascendant and the Moon is in Aries, the affairs of your first house will be highlighted. If you are an Aries ascendant and the Moon is in Leo, the affairs of your fifth house will be highlighted.

Knowing which house the Moon is transiting throughout the month can provide insight and objectivity regarding the blessings or challenges that are likely to experience.

I also invite you to check our Facebook page where we explain daily the positions and effects of the planets.

Wishing you much fun in discovering more about yourself.
